This week we discussed the topic of fear more deeply, and we discussed a lot of fear and unrest, and we found that these fears and uneasiness came from the shadow of childhood, for example, a friend, a prank, or an unintentional apathy of the parents. We created three roles, teenager, fear, and psychiatrist. Our three actors took three different roles in turn because we all had different ideas, so we could bring more ideas to shape the role. We feel that we can create a complete story for fear by using the dialogue between doctor and protagonist. We also need to consider which way we use to express the mood at that time, for example, when it comes to an emotional outburst, we may need to use screaming to express the thoughts of the role. I didn't take part in the last discussion with another actor, but the other three members had some technical problems that were solved on that day. One of the members had experience in the lighting effect, but she was an actor in the work, so she taught the other member how to use the light. I think we have made great progress in this week.

Today we continue to discuss the topic, and we also shared more things for our companions to get inspiration. I find that many of our fears come from bad memories and what happens when we grow up. The fear that I met in the process of growing up was clearly in mind, as my fear of spiders came from when I was very young, and there was a huge spider in my house, that was the biggest insect I saw at the time, and it had eight legs, and I was terrified, and even now I will jump up when I see a very small spider. At that time, we didn't discuss the result, at last, so we decided to play an improvised game called Freeze. When we play this game, we find that if people are in a state of fear, they usually choose to escape or scream with some trembling, and I think it is a good revelation to our group.
On the last day of the week, two of us did not come, so we adjusted our plan, we decided to find some books that were helpful to us, how to find the new idea; we looked up some of the improvised plays and made some preparations for the next week. Today we have discussed some rules that we have to follow when we start create our piece of Theatre. Since we have a very large group, so we have to make some agreements with the whole group and people should follow them, and it will help us to work with each other.
1 We agree that we respect ourselves and each other, as artists and as people, and to support the work and creativity of one another. 2 We agree to give and receive criticisms professionally and impersonally, discuss changes in a way that is respectful and encourages critical thinking. 3 We agree not to say "No" for five minutes, meaning we agree to consider anything for five minutes. 4 We agree that we cannot do it alone. We agree that we need each other. We agree to keep a balanced and equal work and effort. 5 We agree to advocate for ourselves and each other whenever possible. We were divided into two groups from a large group, with two other senior and two junior in my group, and we had only three actors in this group because of the requirements of the IB drama. Together, we discussed the theme of our collective thinking. From Andy's last shared item, there was a book about fear. Our group feels that we can start thinking from fear. We began to share our experiences and what we are afraid of, such as water, pressure, murderers and violence. I'm a fearful person in the dark. When I'm in a dark place, I will fantasize about ghosts or strange things around me, so every night I need to open a light to see what my room looks like; but it's strange that if someone sleeps around me, I can do it. Sleep with no lights. I especially like our theme of concentrating thinking, because for me, this theme has great sense of substitution. We have discussed that we want to personification fear, and an actor can play the role of fear; my team hopes to use this piece of performance to let the audience do not have so much pressure on fear.
Today, all of my classmates brought 3 stuffs into class, those stuffs can be object, music, photo or video that is meaningful to you. I brought photo which is about Seattle's view during night time and it took by me when I stood on Space Needle; this photo is meaningful to me because that was my first time on Space Needle and I was thinking about I am living in this city during my whole high school years. I also brought a magazine, it in Chinese, it is my favorite magazine when I was in middle school, that is why I think it is important. I played a song and also show the music video with my classmates, that is my favorite song now because there is a sad story behind this song.
We had discussed about those object that we brought to class, and we notice most people bring things that is more about their childhood. One of my classmate brought a book which is about sticky note monster, it is a book that popular during my classmates childhood. We thought that is a good point that we can create our piece on it. |
